Winter light over a Hampshire Farm

Winter light over a Hampshire Farm

I thought we’d take a break from the coast for today’s feature and head inland to the glorious rolling countryside of East Hampshire, specifically the wide open farmland around the village of Hambledon. The village is famous as the birthplace of modern cricket, but for me it is worth visiting to hit the footpaths, bridleways and byways that surround the historic centre and take you out into a world of sweeping vistas, a wide-open landscape of green fields punctuated by farms, copses and hedgerows and crowned by the woodland-clad ridges of the higher hills.

What I like about this image is the light. At first viewing, this looks like a rather grey scene, but pause for a moment and you can see that the farm and the field behind are bathed in just a hint of pale sunlight as the weak rays try to burn through the misty cloud shrouding the landscape on this cold late-December afternoon. This hint of glow gives the image warmth and a comfortable cosiness in contrast to the wintry scene it depicts.
