Another image from the post-New Year walk into the mountains above West Merkland, Sutherland. Just a few kilometres in from the road, we came across a herd of red deer, wandering openly across the hillside in front of us. This is stalking country, and most likely for this reason, rather than any great, magnanimous care for their well-being, feeding stations had been set up beside the track. With deep snow on the ground and natural food hard to come by, the deer were happy to hang around despite our presence to munch on the straw in the feeders.
