The calm of a Winter sunset

The calm of a Winter sunset

I can’t remember the last time I’d seen Southampton Water and the Solent so calm. After taking the inland path from Warsash to Hill Head, we burst onto the coast about an hour before sunset. The frosty haze in the sky softened the light of the sun as it dropped towards its setting point behind the New Forest coastline, drenching everything in gold and casting long shadows to accompany the hundreds of people getting their daily dose of exercise and fresh air on the beach. The sea was mirror-like, reflecting the amber glow in the sky on silky wave tops. Even the iconic chimney of the old power station at Calshot had a shimmering twin on the water’s surface.

Nature was making sure that 2020 went out with a show…
