The church of All Saints in the village of Steep, Hampshire. This was taken on our first walk of 2021, a fine circular from the small village of Hawkley at the north end of Hampshire. The walk climbed up, or rather slithered up the chalky mud of the scarp slope of the gloriously named Old Mutton Hill, part of the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve before dropping down to the south near Steep Marsh, on to Steep and then up the lung-busting slope to the memorial to the poet Edward Thomas back in the nature reserve. The mud was thick and treacherous, but the light was at times glorious – as here, with the weak January sun hazed by thin cloud as it dropped down to the horizon.
